Student Examples 3

The third sound piece I listened to was poetry
1. I think that this piece was linear narrative. It started with a beat as and introduction and then started to talk about what poetry meant. It ended by naming many different poets.
2. I think this artist used music in their piece. There was not an actual song but they used a steady beat of what sounded like a drum. I would consider this piece using music.
3. This format made sense for this piece because it starts our asking what you think poetry is. It then moves into people answering what they think poetry is. It also has rap and poetry readings in the background so that it can show the different types of poetry. It then ends with people naming poets.
4. The form of the sound work well in this. I liked that there was the background of people rapping and reading poetry so that you could listen to the different types of poetry while people answered what they thought poetry was. I also think that it was a good decision to use linear narrative so that it was like a story.

Student Examples 2

The second student example I listened to was by rschsnd about manipulating how you look
1. I think that this piece also was a linear narrative. It has a introduction and then explains what it is talking about and ends with what it is about. This middle section was a montage of many different people talking about their piercings. Some of the clips you were not sure what they were talking about but then it would clear itself up.
2. This artist used the non-musical format. It used manipulation of sound and voices of people talking about what they do to manipulate how they look.
3. This formate makes sense because it started off with an introduction of manipulated sounds that you could not recognize. It then led into people talking about piercings and that they manipulate how they make you look. During the clip you think that it is about piercings until the end when you realize that it is about manipulating how you look. It is like a story.
4. The sound qualities that helped this piece were that some of the sound using was manipulated. The manipulated sound led into the topic of manipulating how you look. The form that she using also helped because it was like a story and it took you through the pieces of what she was talking about until you could put it all together in the end.

Student Examples

The first student example I listened to was done by jshellten on stress
1. From what I heard I think that this example was using circular narrative. It started off this one voice and then there was a bunch of what I thought was the same voice all piled together than ended with one voice again. The voices did have similar timber. In the middle there were also a series of sounds that had a similar length so that you could here parts of what they were saying but not all of it so you could get the idea of what it was about. I think it was a circular narrative using montage of sound clips.
2. This artist did not break into music. They used the non-musical formate that portrayed what they were talking about very well.
3. I think the non-musical formate worked better for this piece. When you feel stressed you many times feel empty and overwhelmed and that was what this artist portrayed through this piece. I think it turn out better because it didn't use sound.
4. The forms of sound used in this piece was that it used the same tone/timber of voice. It started out slow and became more overwhelming when the voice pieces began to pile up and sounded like they started to echo. It then ended the same what it started with a single voice continuing the phrase that started the piece.

sound brainstorming questions

The topic I am interested in doing is sports. Some questions asked during the brainstorming activity where:

1. What is my favorite sport?
I have played soccer my whole life. It is the sport I am most familiar with and have the most memories with.

2. What kind of connections do you make while playing?
While I am playing soccer I connect with my teammates. We had become so comfortable playing together that we always knew where the other player was going to be. You also forget about everything else going on and only focus on the game. You can no longer feel any pain or tiredness or hear people yelling.

3. What do you like about sports?
I like the physical exercise of sports. I love yo work out and sports push you to go as hard as you can. I also like the friends you make and connections you make with them. Playing sports also makes it more fun to play sports because you can connect with how the players are feeling. You also learn lessons while playing like how to work with other people and push yourself to do your best.

1. Today in class I found the brainstorming activity to be very helpful. Although it helped to think of new perspectives of your topic it is still hard to think of a topic that you can only find in Syracuse. I think we should be allowed to use freesound for this project along with our own without needing to come to you first.

2. I think that the critiquing was helpful and like that we get time to make revisions if needed.

3. I am glad we get more time to do this next project since recorders are already checked out until monday and we are getting a lot of other work in other classes.

Art of Creativity:

1. I have experienced many "flash of inspiration" moments before. I have realized that many of these moments come while I am falling asleep at night. I have also had many come to me while I have been on hikes with my dog. I feel that many of my best ideas come when I am not forcing myself to think about them. It seems that when I am forcing myself to think about new ideas when I can not think of any that I actually like.

2. I never thought of myself having a method for coming up with idea but after thinking about it I do. Usually when I am having trouble thinking of an idea i refer back to nature. There are many beautiful things in nature. I have many books of different insects and flowers that I look through sometimes to get ideas. I also go into nature when I am so I can clear my mind and be amongst nature in person. I have also noticed that I think of ideas better after working out.

3. The last couple of days I have taken time each day to sit in my main lounge and observe what is going on. I sat in the lounge at different times each day. Usually I only sit in the lounge if I am waiting to meet someone and come down earlier than them. I usually sit on my phone until they come down. The last few days I have put my phone away and observed everything. There have been maintenance people cleaning and yelling to one another. They are the same people everyday that I had never paid to much attention to before. Some days the tv is on with no one watching while other days there are been people gathering on the couches watching together. I also noticed all the people that walk through or by the lounge. There are certain times between classes that there are a rush of people while other times there is no one. Watching these people go by I noticed the very different styles people have. I also noticed the different colors in peoples clothes and hair. Many people walk through not paying any attention to what is around them either on their cell phones or ipods which I used to do before I took the time to sit and observe. There were many things to notice and focus in on while sitting in the lounge. The weather also effected the lighting in the lounge whether it was snowy or sunny.

4. This article talks about how to relax physically so that you can relax and feel yourself relieve its tensity. It also talks about taking deep breaths and taking in more oxygen. While relaxing physically you also need to relax mentally. This article gives ways to do both. You need that sense of relaxation for your ind to become free. It also talks about kids creative minds and kids that play more are usually more creative. When you have more fun and are thinking outside the bow it is easier for your mind to find new ideas.

5. I think this type of kinesthetic would have been helpful in the 1500-1800's in Europe. I am sure that there were people that did do similar things to help them come up with new idea people had just not studied it yet. It can make you feel like you are not as talented if other people are coming up with ideas and you can't. I am not sure if people would have necessarily thought this type of thinking would be a good idea but it would help.

1. I found it very helpful to listen to the different examples of abstract sound other students have done. There is such a wide range of things that are accepted for this project I need to remember to keep my mind open on what I am doing.

2. I also thought it was fun to listen to different parts of movies and commercials to show that what we are doing relates to things we watch and different careers. I also liked that we related it to real live situations.

3. I liked to have work time in class but would have also liked to critique as a whole class so that you could get everyones opinions. Also the sounds were played very loud so that it was a little distracting to the group having work time.
During this discussion I learned about how the body and mind connected within the subject of abstract sounds. I learned that your mind can press and explore beyond what your body may think is comfortable. It was interesting to hear the different thinks people thought abstraction meant. The abstract sounds are also associated with being sexy and out there; this is because these sounds make us think and fell different feelings when we listen to them. Abstract sound and have rhythm or just different timbre's and pitch to create completely different feelings when listening to it.

1. How can the attitudes toward sound we discussed in class be applied to the works of these two artists?
The first sound artist Janek Schaefer used sound related to space. He took different places that were usually quiet and applied sound to them. He would create a space and environment with the different sounds he put together. This is exactly like the project we are doing in class now. We are also taking random sounds and creating an environment with them. His work was a little more abstract than the project we are doing now but much like it.
Stephen Vitiello created sound environments that were more like music. They were very long. He creates an atmosphere of sound that sounds like an environment in more of a musical way. The type of sound work he does is a lot like what we are doing by taking a lot of sounds and creating an environment he is just doing so in longer more musical way.
2. What formal vocabulary can you use to describe their works?
Janek Schaefer used many different sounds to create an environment. He used images and sound to make people make connections between sound and image. He used different sounds to add variety. He also used different amplifications of volume for different sounds and fading in and out of sound.
Stephen Vitiello used many different sounds and repeated the same sound in different tones to create variety. He creates an atmospheric environment in a way that sounds like it could be an environment around us but in a more musical way. He uses more rythem in his works. He uses different amplifications also.
3. Do you agree more with the Sound Explorers approach and attitudes toward sound or would you prefer one of the other groups discussed in class?
I found Janek's approach to sound interesting because he put interiors and sound together that would not normally be heard. Stephen's approach to sound was more rythemic and musical. It was also much longer. I thought it was interesting what he was doing but was not as much in my liking. The sound artist I found most interesting was the nature sounds we heard in class.

1. I learned that I should study in groups and outline what I am studying before I start.
2. I also learned that I need to review what I have read after I read it.
3. I also learned that I shouldn't study a little of each subject a night but spend a long time on one subject a night. And that I remember best what I see.

1. Yesterday in class I found it very helpful to have time to work on our sound env. so that any questions we had could be answered before we were on our own.

2. I thought it was interesting to do the in class projects researching different people that use sound in what they do. I found my groups the least interesting but liked most of the other groups.

3. I think it is helpful that we get to use freesound also incase we don't have all the sounds we needed.

The three most important things you learned, noticed or didn't understand in the in class exercise.

1. I found it very interesting that the birds in forests were starting to imitate industrial noises because they were beginning to be around it so much. That shows a lot of how we as a country needs to become more green and help our earth.

2. I also really liked learning about the white void group that found a way to create art with light movement and sound. I find light really interesting and all the different things you can do with it.

3. I noticed that most of the artist and sounds we were talking about had to do with industrial sounds in some way. Since industrial sounds are so common now most of us do not focus on it but this helped me to re notice it.
Goal: Possibility-how to make work you want to make with time based media

1. Formal Vocab.
2. History/Theory/Criticality
3. Technical Proficiency
4. Research

Art of Noise Questions:

After reading this article I think that if Russolo were to have a world with out simultaneous sound he would be very bored. Russolo thinks of sounds as feelings. He likes to play and here sounds in a way of imagining what they are representing. He thinks through sound more than most people I know. I think that if he lived in a world with out sound he would not have a subject of interest like he does now. He is a type of artist that thinks through noise and without that he may or may not be able to express his creativity through feeling in a different way. Living in a world with out these simultaneous sounds Russolo would not be challenged to interpret or feel the sounds that he is hearing and play them together to form a different sound and feeling.

Russolo does value noise. He loves noise and how different they all are. He finds them interesting to put together and the feelings the sounds instigate. I do value noise. With out noise I would feel lost in the world. Although I may not focus on noise as much as musicians or other types of artists I do value noise and the sounds around me. With out noise I would not be able to feel the reactions to the sounds I could be hearing which would cause me to miss out of many things in life.

The sound environment in my dorm is much more hectic than the sound environment in my house. There are many more people moving, talking and closing doors in my dorm than my house. Also in my dorm I can hear the sounds of the city like sirens and cars driving by which I also do not hear in my house. The sound environment in my house is much more calm. I would usually hear my sister singing and my dog barking when there was a lot going on. I can focus in my dorm because I can keep myself from getting to distracted from my work. As an environment I can focus better in my house because there is more over all quiet and also more places to go to if one more is not quiet.
