three things I learned in class were..

1. One thing that I learned was how export files and videos to quick time files and upload them on the blog.
2. I also learned how to decided what footage I have that is better than others and how to edit it down.
3. I also learned how to go about deciding the format of my video.

(I also forgot to make a blog title for each assignment because I though the video title for it would say what it is but they are uploaded in order and I commented on all of them to say what each one was)

blog review

1. I was surprised about how much I found interest in playing with sound and image. I have never done any work like this before. I was not excited for this class but was happily surprised about how into some of the projects I got.
2. When I first started time arts I was very scared. I blogged about how I was worried about this class because I had never done anything like it before. Ways that I helped myself to become more comfortable in this class was by meeting with you after class to go over programs. I also when we worked in pairs I worked with someone more experienced so that I could learn from them. I also asked a lot of questions so that I could understand what I was doing. I also tried very hard on my projects sometime a lot longer than other people had. Even though it was not always obvious that I spent so long I tried my best in this class to produce the best work I could.
3. The most challenging assignment for me was the abstract video. Although it was on of my favorite projects it was the most challenging. I liked this project a lot because I liked matching the images with the sounds. The hardest part for me was using the effects. I did not know how to take advantage of all of the effects on imovie. I also had a lot of trouble matching up the image and the timing of the image and sound so that it was on the right beat. I spent over three hours working on this project and still could not match everything up perfectly. It was frustrating to see people that matched everything up and spent half the time. I think that the project that came most naturally to me was the abstract sound project. I was not sure how to start this project. I decided to just jump right in and see where it took me. I ended up having fun with matching up and layering different sounds. I thought that I did well on that project.
4. Some concepts that I think that I will take with me and use in my future major of interior design is what design and colors go with the sounds and environments around it. Different sounds and environments will change how the design of and interior is view. I could also use what sounds I would play in the space if I was showing it or playing music in it. Another aspect is how sound and noise would sound in the space I design.
5. I have learned about how to go about running a critique. I have learned to talk to the artist when critiquing their work. I have also learned not to make excuses for yourself as the artist after showing your work to people.

three things I learned in class are..
1. One thing I learned in class is how to upload video from my camera onto my laptop. I thought it was helpful to have a class review session so we knew what to do.

2. Another thing I learned was how video affects our lives. The history of video activity helped me to focus on how important video is in our lives.

3. Another thing I leaned is how to get people to be more comfortable while interviewing them. I also got feedback on other ways that could help my project.
What does video have to do with power?
I think video has to do with power in a way that some people feel as if they have more authority when they are on camera. People sometimes try to show off by being in more control over a situation or people. Video can also capture people being in more control and showing the different peoples placement. For example if someone is more direct or passive.

What does video have to do with how we live our lives?
We look to video as a way to see how we live. Video can capture what is going on in all different places and keep people connected. Video can also evoke peoples emotion and show a different side to something that has happened. Our culture also watches video and television as a part of everyday life. We see what is going and in the world and in other peoples lives and can compare it to our own.

What kind of life do you live and how will video technology influence that?
I do not want to be sheltered in my own town and small problems and not know what is going on in the world. Video can capture things that are happening around the world and share it in other places so that I can be educated and know what is going on. Seeing the problems of the world also helps me to feel more lucky and realize my problems are very minimal.

three minutes of video:
a) For these three minutes I tested one of the people telling their story. Since I didn't get the video camera until wednesday I recorded wednesday night and not that many people were available. I recorded inside because it was dark out but am going to try to redo it and get the others done outside. I recorded straight on so that it was like we were having a conversation.
b) You can use distance and proximity so show what is important or what you are focusing on. I was planning on just recoding people but there have been a lot of people out playing sports so I may try to record people playing where I would then use a farther proximity to get everything and a closer one when they are telling their story.
c)So far I have only recorded one person and used the straight on shot that was a little lower than eye level.
d) Since I recorded inside I had more control over the lighting. I tried to follow what the training video said and shine light on them. I turn the desk lights on so that there was more light.

I just realized what I forgot and rent out a fire wire so I could not upload the video on my computer so it is kinda of hard to see how it came out.

1. One thing that I learned in class today was how to work the video camera. We learned how to find the categories on the camera and how to use them.

2. A second thing that I thought was helpful and relearned was the different forms you can record in. These forms can help decide how start your recordings.

3. One analysis of an example we watched in class was of phobias. In this video there was a narrative of someone telling their phobia. The artist used different effects so you couldn't see their face or tell what voice they had. the end had someone coming out from under the bed. It also repeated some of the things said. It was very creepy and had an overall dark lighting.

Three of the ideas that I have for this final project in my theme of sports is to interview people about bad injuries that have gotten while playing sports. Another idea I had was so have people tell the story of their best memories while playing sports. My third idea was to have people talk about any of their worst memories they have of sports.

I am not sure which topic may be better between having people tell the story of their best memories they have from sports or having them tell the story of their worst injury. I want to choose the one that will get the most emotion.

The topic that I am leaning towards is having people tell the stories of their best memories they have from sports.
I am choosing this idea because I have a lot of great memories from sports. I want to get emotion from the people I am interviewing and I think it is easier to show they are happy than sad. I am also interested to hear about what other people think of when they think of sports since most people think of their best time when they think back on them.
The locations I was thinking on shooting this footage in was either outside in a grassy area or in the different peoples rooms. I am not sure which I would rather do yet. I am leaning more towards doing it outside.
If I end up shooting outside I will have to be aware of the sun and where it is in the sky. It is not good to shoot when the sun is behind someone of straight above. I was thinking that I would shoot the people talking from straight on as if we were having a conversation. I may explore more how it looks when leaning the camera up slightly at them.
For the places that I want to shoot I do not be permission from people to shoot there because they are my friends rooms or outside in public places.
Potential problems I may have is a lot of background noise while shooting outside. If I were to shoot inside I may get better sound. I will test run both places and see which works better. Shooting outside could also lead to difficulty with weather. Another issue I may run into it not getting the emotion from people I was hoping for. I may need to try different ways for them to show and talk about what I want them to.
I am going to find out all the peoples schedules that I am planning on interviewing. I may end up recording inside incase the only times we can meet is at night. I am planning to record at least one to two people every time I record. I will then listen and watch the recordings and decide what ones I want to keep if not all of them.

Witness training video questions:
1. Three techniques you can use when trying to shoot steady shoots with out using a tripod are to shoot ten second shots so that you get enough footage, to keep your elbows close to your body and your knees bent slightly. Also do not wave the camera around hold it in one place.
2. To minimize camera shake while walking and taping you should keep you legs bend and body forward while walking straight and glide your feet. You can do the same when walking back. To walk to the side also glide crossing your legs gliding while bending your knees.
3. Camera movements that mimic eye movement are to not move you camera to quickly. Use wide settings when taking it everything and zoom when focusing on a subject. If you move, move straight across at eye level.
4. You should hold at shot for about ten seconds. It may feel long but will not seem long when watching it. Purposeful movements for the shot. Also do not move to quickly. Do not wave the camera around. Try to pick a shot that covers everything. If you need to move quickly make a swift straight movement to the side.
5. To avoid giving a sea sick feeling keep your camera steady and to not shack it. When you are trying to get everything in do not wave your camera up and down.
6. to avoid lighting problems to not shoot someone with the sun behind them or when it is very sunny. Cloudy days are better to shoot with outside.
7. Proximity is used to show the viewer what you are focusing on. A wide view shows where it is and close ups show what is being focused on.
8. Their mission is to open peoples eyes to the world and human rights. They put tape over the camera light so that they can capture things with out people knowing they are taping and can get the effect of what is it like where they are.

1. One thing that I learned in class today was how to brainstorm for this next project. The brainstorming activity was very helpful. I liked hearing other peoples ideas about my topic. Once I started to talk about a topic more I found myself getting new ideas for it.

2. I also learned how to analyze a video. I thought it was helpful that we were paired off and looked at one video more in depth so see and talk about what that person did.

3. A third thing I learned was the different steps to go about this final project. I found it helpful that this project is broken down so you can get new ideas as you go.
Gabby and I chose to analyze an ipod commercial instead of a ted talk because it was more colorful and had more movement.

1. This commercial had a lot of different colors that were changing in the back ground. The colors changed with the beat so that is was a smooth transition. The colors also flowed into each other so that it was not as abrupt.
2. The pace was set by the sound that was playing some back ground colors stayed longer than others and some of the people's body colors changed when other times they didn't.
3. The backgrounds were very abstract and had different colors flowing all around along with different colored shapes.
4. a.) the color temperature was over all very warm. The background colors were warm and usually the people's bodies were cool.
b.) Most of the people's body figures were in the center of the screen. There were times when it was split into three sections. At times the sections changed. The background was always all over.
c.) The camera angle changed sometimes because there were close ups and then far away shots some of the angles were even looking up at the people.
d.) The proximity was over all pretty much the same but there was a few times when it was closer or farther away.
e.) The pace was very fast going along with the clip of the song. The figure and back ground were always moving.
f.) There was a contrast between the people figures and the back ground colors. The people were usually darker while the background was warm. The background colors changed and contrasted slightly.
g.) there was some repetition of form and color through out the video even though it did not seem repetitive.
h.) There was a sensitivity to light a little bit but most of the light quality was the same.
1. Zoe did a good job using the base rhythm of the piece to connect that to the visual. She had several different pictures repeat over and over again to this rhythm. When the piece had a change in the sound such as a disruption of a zipper of a clanging she added a video affect to the visual which disrupted the pictures as well and tied it well to the sound.
2. The video had a basic base rhythm that didn't change too much so I think that if her photos had changed too much in rhythm it wouldn't have flowed as well with the sound. However the video FX that she added helped to make it appear as though it was speeding up or slowing down.
3. She also did a good job of distorting the images when the sound piece was disrupted by an unusual noise she would blur out the photos to a point where you couldnt recognize them. This at first caught me off guard and as the video progressed I learned to expect them. However I wasn't bored with them because with each disruption she used a different effect so it became something that was new each time.
4. The color and temperature was very bright warm and strong throughout the video and Zoe did a good job of connecting the images graphically. They varied in angles and when the video started it was a lower angle and then moved to more eye level shots. This helped to make the video more interesting. The pacing of the photos was good because it followed the steady rhythm of the music very well. She used the same photos to repeat the base rhythm and the repetition connected the whole video together. The photos she used were also good quality and the brightness and amount of light they had connected them together well.
Gabby's abstract video:

1. Gabby's video maintained continuity through editing. She used images that had similar shapes that felt as if they flowed together even though the images were different. Depending on the sounds playing she changed the images my editing them in imovie so that they changed with the sound that was playing. Each sound had a different effect put on it so you could see the difference in the sounds visually.

2. Gabby set the images at different paces depending on what sound they were matched up with. The sounds that were longer had a longer image that usually had an effect up on it. She set each images in time with the sound it was placed on so that everything was on beat.

3. Gabby abstracted many of the images through out her video. I did not find that any of the images were abstracted to much. Each image that was abstracted differently depending on the sound it was put over. I think it was very affective that no image looked like it repeated the same affect as a previous image.

4. a.) There was a wide range of color temperature through out this video. Some images were darker than other. Gabby even altered some of the images so that they faded to darker colors making the color temperature cooler.
b.) The images that gabby used had similarities so that they flowed together while watching the video. She placed the images that were next we each other well so that they flowed. She also zoomed in and out of some images changing their original composition.
c.) The camera angles changed through out the video depending on the image that was used. Some were taken looking upward while others were close up. The angles of the images changed slightly in each picture.
d.) Most of the images were taken in the same location of Syracuse campus. The proximity changed because some were taken from far away while others were taken up close.
e.) The pacing changed depending on the sound that it was put over.
f.) There was a contrast in images and especially in color. Depending on the contrast in sound depended how big the contrast in images was.
g.) There was repetition of the images there were used. You could tell that the same images were used but they were usually altered differently so it wasn't the same image exactly.
h.) Gabby changed the light quality more than they already were as an alteration to some of the images.

1. One thing that I learned in class was about how to work imovie. I thought it was very helpful that you went through a imovie review so that we could learn everything we needed to know.

2. I was confused about this project at first but learn that it was not as difficult as I thought. Be shown examples was very helpful to see the final project. I really like that you went through the starting process of showing us how to start this project so we could see the process.

3. I also liked that we had time to work on the projects in class. I think it was good for our class to go out side since it was so nice out. I think that was one way that it got our class more excited about this class.
